Economic Development Committee
Overview
The approach for the Economic Development committee is to focus squarely on the essential elements for developing and sustaining business growth and success through business and retention, expansion, and relocation back to the city. A major objective of the committee will be to develop a plan of action to assist businesses in their efforts to rebuild and grow their companies.
Seven sub-committees were identified to coordinate efforts to provide maximum results for the project. The Committee will meet weekly, starting on Tuesday, November 1st, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Sheraton. The sub-committees are:
- Hospitality
- Maritime
- Medical/Healthcare/Research
- Film/Entertainment
- Technology
- Oil and Gas
- Workforce Development
The Committee has begun identifying local and state resources that possess the required expertise to facilitate getting the job done; as well as, individuals throughout the state to sit on the committee for Economic Development. Many have volunteered and will participate at the weekly Committee meetings.

Hospitality:The entire Greater New Orleans region claims a diverse and dynamic mix of travel and tourism destinations. Visitors come to the area in record numbers and the companies serving them have realized much success.

Maritime: As the principal Gulf Coast hub for the North South transportation corridor, the New Orleans region is strategically located as a gateway to reach world markets. Specific growth segments include warehousing production and decaffeination facilities.

Medical/Healthcare/Research: The New Orleans universities represent key science research and development institutions and also provide rich educational resources for the area. New Orleans has also received significant support and funding for the development of a biotechnology and biomedical community.

Technology: The New Orleans region is home to many, diverse information technology operations which support many of our existing industries including maritime, life sciences, and other sectors. The region is also home to major federal IT installations which support various branches of the military and federal agencies.

Oil & Gas: Once a vibrant industry with headquarters out of New Orleans, oil and gas needs to be returned to that status of years ago. In order to do that, it will take a concentrated effort by the experts in the oil and gas field working with the economic developers.
